Routine dental check-ups and inspecting your mouth at home are some great ways to prevent oral cancer. However, sometimes no matter what a person does, this disease occurs and necessitates prompt treatment. Since it is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, we here at the offices of Dr. Thomas Bissell are dedicated to informing patients about all the oral cancer symptoms in Chester, NJ and what they can do to curtail this disease during its early stages.
List of Symptoms
There are a number of signs that could reveal the presence of mouth cancer in an individual. These include:
• Loose teeth
• Pain in the jaw and teeth
• Persistent sore throat
• Feeling as though something is caught in the throat
• Sores within the mouth that do not disappear after two weeks
• Difficulty swallowing and chewing
• Problems with moving the tongue or jaw
• Numbness in the tongue
• Chronic bad breath
• Swellings within the jaw
• Teeth and/or dentures no longer fit together like they used to
• Changes in voice pitch
• Lump in the neck
• Drastic and unexplained weight loss
If you notice one or several of these symptoms within your mouth, do not panic right away. These can also be symptoms of other medical conditions. The important thing to do is to contact your periodontist to get a comprehensive check-up. Our professional will perform a cancer screening, which involves checking for any irregular lumps. If anything looks suspicious, we will take a small tissue sample for analysis.
