Dr. Bissell will begin by administering a local anesthetic for your comfort. This periodontal treatment consists of cleaning deep below the gum line along the tooth root. Calculus (tartar) will be removed using an ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments designed to clean the root surfaces. Scaling refers to the removal of tartar while planing is basically a smoothing away of any rough or infected tooth material. These are performed in conjunction and once complete, your teeth and gums will become progressively healthier with proper home care.
After the procedure, you may experience mild discomfort that can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Dr. Bissell may recommend a mouth rinse during the first few days, as the gums may bleed and remain tender for a short time.
