3 Things to Know About Implant-Supported Dentures

When a child loses a tooth, it is cute. When an adult has a missing tooth or teeth, he or she will often feel more self-conscious about smiling and speaking and might even have problems with speaking or chewing properly. Fortunately, as technology advances, so do the methods for replacing missing teeth. One treatment that is increasing in popularity is implant-supported dentures.

1. What They Are

Implant-supported dentures are a unique combination of traditional removable dentures and permanent dental implants. Implant-supported dentures do not use dental adhesive like traditional dentures do, but can still be removed. These dentures are available in two types: bar-retained dentures fasten into your mouth with clips, and ball-retained dentures snap into corresponding sockets of metal studs.

2. The Procedure for Implant-Supported Dentures

When you come to our periodontist, Dr. Thomas A. Bissell, he will begin by determining where best to place your implant-supported dentures. He will also begin the process of creating a custom-fitted denture. The first step of the surgical procedure is to implant at least three titanium posts into your jawbone. Over time, these posts will integrate with your jaw. During that time, a temporary denture will be secured until the healing process is complete. Once the posts fuse with the bone, we will place your permanent denture. This denture will provide stability and does not require any adhesive pastes. We usually ask for one follow-up appointment once your dentures are complete to ensure they are comfortable and you are happy with them.

3. The Benefits of Implant Dentures

Implant-supported dentures offer several benefits. They can be fitted for both your upper and lower jaw and can be fixed or removable. Implant dentures mean there is less risk of your false teeth shifting or slipping out entirely as you eat or speak, and implant posts are better for your jawbone because they protect your gums and remaining teeth against decay and recession.
