7 Steps to Preventing Gum Disease

Gum disease is surprisingly common but it does not have to be. While the majority of people will need treatment for gum disease at some point in their lives, the infection is entirely preventable. Dr. Thomas A. Bissell, our periodontist who treats gum disease in Chester, NJ, offers seven helpful tips for protecting your teeth and gums.

Ways You Can Safeguard Your Smile against Gum Disease

Floss your teeth every night. It takes two minutes and it is the healthiest thing you can do for your gums.
Brush your teeth twice a day, at minimum. Removing plaque and bacteria before they can accumulate goes a long way to help you avoid gum disease.
Choose foods that are good for your smile. Apples and strawberries provide the nutrients your gums need but did you know that the fiber in these fruits also “scrubs” your teeth clean? Sugary sweets, on the other hand, promote decay and bacterial growth.
Schedule regular dental exams and cleanings. Dr. Bissell monitors the health of your smile in order to detect gum disease in its earliest stages.
Rethink bad habits. If you smoke, stop. It is terrible for your smile—and the rest of your body, too. The same goes for chewing tobacco. Talk to your doctor about cessation products.
Don’t chew on things that aren’t food, like ice or pens. Be good to your teeth and gums.
If you can’t brush, chew sugarless gum. It promotes saliva production and can help remove food particles from your smile.
Preventing gum disease is easy when you know what to do. Call our office to schedule a consultation with Dr. Thomas A. Bissell for gum disease in Chester, NJ.
